Pattrick Smellie has worked as both a journalist and public relations adviser in Wellington for the last 35 years. A former Parliamentary Press Gallery chairman, The Australian newspaper’s first New Zealand correspondent in the 1990s, and the co-owner of the BusinessDesk business and economic news service, Pattrick also co-owns The Hugo Group, a briefing and intelligence service for chief executives of New Zealand business, government agencies and institutions of scale. His communications experience began in the mid-1980s, when he worked as a press secretary to then Finance Minister Roger Douglas, and resumed in the 2000s when he worked for a variety of listed companies, principally Contact Energy. He established BusinessDesk in 2008.
